Project Background
Evolution in Online Trading: Scotia iTrading
At Scotiabank, the aim has always been to provide users with intuitive and innovative solutions. With my experience at Scotia Wealth Management, I observed firsthand the evolving needs of our clientele. We recognized a gap in the market for a platform that could simplify the complexities of trading for both novices and experts. Thus, Scotia iTrading was conceptualized. Our goal was to make online trading more accessible, comprehensible, and efficient for all. We integrated feedback, streamlined processes, and employed modern design principles to ensure Scotia iTrading not only met but exceeded user expectations. The result? A platform that's truly user-centric, giving our clients the confidence and tools they need to navigate the world of online trading.
Task And Mission
Guiding the Design Journey
Our primary mission was to reimagine online trading for Scotiabank's diverse clientele. This meant understanding the unique needs, preferences, and challenges faced by users ranging from trading novices to seasoned professionals. I spearheaded efforts to collaborate closely with stakeholders, gather user feedback, and incorporate cutting-edge UX/UI principles. By keeping the user at the heart of our process, we were able to prioritize tasks effectively, ensuring each design decision was backed by concrete insights. Our approach was iterative; each stage of the project built upon the last, with regular user testing to validate our choices. The end result? A seamless, intuitive platform that empowers users to navigate the world of online trading with confidence.
-
Research
Delved deep into understanding user needs through extensive field research, stakeholder interviews, and user surveys. This foundational phase helped in uncovering pain points, user goals, and potential opportunities for the platform.
-
Wireframing
Developed detailed wireframes that served as the project's blueprint. These provided a visual representation of the user interface, enabling stakeholders to grasp the project's structure, flow, and overall direction.
-
Testing
Conducted regular usability tests with actual users, using both low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes. Feedback from these sessions was invaluable in refining the design and ensuring it met user expectations and needs.
-
Iterating
Adopted an iterative design approach, ensuring that insights from each phase were incorporated into subsequent designs. Continuous refinement ensured the final product was both user-friendly and aligned with business objectives.

Steps to Investing in iTRADE
Information Architecture (IA) is the backbone of a well-designed interface. It's the art and science of organizing and labeling content effectively and sustainably. My work at Scotia revolved around structuring content, understanding user paths, and creating intuitive navigation. By doing so, I ensured that users could easily find the information they needed and accomplish their tasks seamlessly. With the correct IA in place, we reduced cognitive load, enhanced user satisfaction, and drove better engagement on our platforms.
DEFINE
High-Fidelity Design
For this project, I progressed to high-fidelity deliverables after initial research and low-fidelity wireframes. Using the insights gained from our personas, Megan and Amy, I crafted detailed, pixel-perfect mockups that showcased the full visual and interactive design of the interface. These high-fidelity designs ensured stakeholders could visualize the end-product and provided developers with a clear roadmap for implementation. Each element was meticulously designed with user needs in mind, ensuring an intuitive and engaging experience for both Megan, our cost-conscious Millennial, and Amy, who had her own unique set of preferences and goals.
